Danse Des Marins Russes. Composed By – Reinhold GlièreConductor – Frederick FennellOrchestra – Orchestre Eastman-Rochester. Khatchaturian, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Gliere - An Evening At The Ballets Russes ‎(LP).

The Ballets Russes lasted just 20 years, disbanding after the death of Diaghilev. But between 1909 and 1929, it staged more than 50 courageous new works. Diaghilev brought together choreographers, composers and painters who were pushing the boundaries; his company became a hotbed of modernist invention. In 1913, The Rite of Spring generated riots at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, as audiences reacted to the primitivist ferocity of Nijinksy's choreography and Stravinksy's music. Such music had never been heard at the ballet. Determined to make "total" dance theatre, Diaghilev took his pick from concert composers such as Ravel, Debussy and Prokofiev. He also chose leading painters to create his designs, working with Picasso, Matisse, Braque, Miró and De Chirico. These collaborations had a wider impact.

Overview: The Ballets Russes-the most innovative dance company of the 20th century-propelled the performing arts to new heights through groundbreaking collaborations between artists, composers, choreographers, dancers, and fashion designers. Adapted from the exhibition conceived by and first shown at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in 2010, the presentation in Washington draws upon that rich survey, including some 80 works from the V&A’s renowned collection of dance artifacts, and adds about 50 objects, generously offered by more than 20 lenders, private and public.

The Ballets Russes toured popular works to new audiences in North and South America. Yet there were long periods in Europe without performing, in which the company could workshop original ideas. Léonide Massine emerged as a talented new choreographer, drawing on influences from the countries of his travels, notably Italy and Spain. This content was originally written in association with the exhibition Diaghilev and the Golden Age of the Ballets Russes, 1909-1929, on display at the V&A 25 September 2010 – 9 January 2011.

His style of dance was simultaneously strong and light. He astounded audiences with his breathtaking jumps, creating the effect of flying in the air. Everything about him was surprising and strange, even the arithmetic of his life: 10 years of childhood, 10 years of ballet school, 10 extraordinary years on stage – all together, 30 years. After getting his professional dance education at the Mariinsky Theater School, George Balanchine worked as a choreographer with the Ballets Russes, staging 10 ballets, including Apollo, to the music of Stravinsky. This ballet is considered to be one of the best examples of neoclassical ballet choreography.
