Steve Reich's commercial success had ballooned after his prior release on ECM, Music for 18 Musicians, and this collection of three compositions, two new and one from 1967, was the follow-up. Music for a Large Ensemble is very much of a piece with the prior work, using extended melodic lines, a larger palette of sound colors, and key changes every several minutes. It's charming and pleasantly busy in an industrious way but really covers little new ground. The remaining two pieces are where the real meat lies
This album consists of 3 pieces composed by Steve Reich. The earliest composition was Violin Phase (1967) and this is played by a solo violinist. The performer, in this case Shem Guibbory, plays to the accompaniment of 3 pre-recorded tapes of himself. The resulting music consists of the shifting phases of sound between the performer and taped music and is typical of the early Reich minimalist style. Recordings from 1980 (in Music for Large Ensemble and Octet it was made the day after the American premiere of the revised versions at Carnegie Hall), excellent sound, excellent liner notes by Reich himself. TT is a short 49 minutes.
Strangely grouped together on this recording with his later pieces, the 1967 composition was more or less "It's Gonna Rain" for solo violin, a phasing piece that lets its process unfold quite gradually. The rhythms contained within become a fascinating progression; as with many of Reich's early works, you can hear the process behind the music unfold
1978 studio album by Steve Reich. In his introduction to the score, Reich mentions that although the piece is named Music for 18 Musicians, it is not necessarily advisable to perform the piece with that few players due to the extensive doubling it requires. The piece is based on a cycle of eleven chords. A small piece of music is based on each chord, and the piece returns to the original cycle at the end. The sections are named "Pulses", and Section I-XI. Music for a Large Ensemble (1978). Variations for Winds, Strings and Keyboards (1979).
