Town Hall Concert is a 1964 live album by jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus. It was recorded in New York City at The Town Hall on 4 April 1964. So Long Eric" is a 12-bar blues that got its name after Eric Dolphy informed Mingus he would be leaving the band to stay in Europe before a concert in Oslo.
This album is made of six numbers from the famous Town Hall concert of 1947, plus offerings from four others, which if not perhaps quite so famous are nevertheless all more than worthy of your attention. Duke plays some pleasant piano on "Long Long Journey" and Pops comes on with a blues vocal which is quite inimitable. Snafu," a boppish kind of tune, doesn't suit Louis quite so well, but as usual he can dig his way out of any situation with his horn. Little Girl" and "Mahogany Hall" feature a much more basic beat and Louis plays in a style much nearer New Orleans than was usual in these days. Kid Ory takes a splendid chorus on the second named tune, and the work of both drummers is exceptional.
Trumpeter, bandleader and singer Louis Armstrong was an important innovator of early jazz. He introduced many contemporary popular songs to the jazz world that are now considered standards 1922 – "Farewell Blues" is a jazz composition by Paul Mares, Leon Roppolo and Elmer Schoebel of the Friar's Society Orchestra. It was used as the band's theme music, and their performances at the Friar's Inn influenced several younger white jazzmen, such as Bud Freeman and Jimmy McPartland
