Sun City Creeps has subtle Graceland touches while The Take shifts into psych-freakout overdrive around the 3:12 mark. Jeremy Earl’s thin falsetto drapes over the songs like an elegant veil, providing a steadying warmth that carries the album. City Sun Eater In the River of Light Woods. Nine albums in, Woods are comfortable in their identity as perennial Brooklynite psych-folkers. You can hear their aspirations on songs like Can’t See It All, fragrant with ‘70s deep-crate touches, and Hollow Home, with its deep Beach Boys vibes. Sun City Creeps has subtle Graceland touches while The Take shifts into psych-freakout overdrive around the 3:12 mark.
City Sun Eater isn’t a complete reinvention. Going the high fidelity route was definitely a risk this far into Woods’ existence, but the band never fully embraced the lo-fi label, and City Sun Eater proves that everything about them sounds just as strong with or without the fuzz.
Album opener Sun City Creeps sets the tone for what will unfold over the album’s 11 tracks; mid-tempo NPR funk made by professionals. With its disco-stab guitars and elegant horn arrangements that lack the requisite oomph to really be considered soul, Sun City Creeps main selling point is its resistance to succumb to the obvious. It is the kind of song that a different band would build into a rollicking freak-out, as it contains all the requisite elements of a rager.
Whatever the source, City Sun Eater is obviously informed by the swinging rhythms and honking horns of that style. The rest of the album features a few more songs that mine this same territory, and while it's a little weird to hear the band making such a dramatic stylistic shift, it mostly works.
Yeah, Can't See at All is prob my favourite on here.
City Sun Eater is so thick with atmosphere that the record almost seems to radiate heat and scent; perhaps more than any other Woods LP, this is an album enamored of the strangeness and open-ended possibilities of sounds themselves. This quality manifests in the wah-wah drenched guitars in "Sun City Creeps" and "The Take," the surrealistic organ of "Can't See At All," and the alternately jubilant and unnerving horns throughout.

Woods’ ninth album, City Sun Eater In The River of Light, is perhaps their best, distilling their sanguine take on timeless rock ‘n’ roll. But Woods are also the gateway into a miniature world, an ecosystem of the band’s own devising. Each Woods album is released by Earl’s record label, Woodsist, which has long nurtured musicians of a certain restless bent. In the late ’00s, Woodist was home to Kurt Vile and Thee Oh Sees; more recently, the label released albums by folk-rock troubadour Cian Nugent, Maine-based electro-psych outfit Herbcraft, and Northwest angst-pop trio the Woolen Men.
