Live at Birdland is a 1964 album by jazz musician John Coltrane. 3. Birdland (New York jazz club) – Birdland is a jazz club started in New York City on December 15,1949. The original Birdland, which was located at 1678 Broadway, just north of West 52nd Street in Manhattan, was closed in 1965 due to increased rents, but it re-opened for one night in 1979. A revival began in 1986 with the opening of the second nightclub by the name that is now located in Manhattans Theater District.
Arguably John Coltrane's finest all-around album, this recording has brilliant versions of "Afro Blue" and "I Want to Talk About You"; the second half of the latter features Coltrane on unaccompanied tenor tearing into the piece but never losing sight of the fact that it is a beautiful ballad. The remainder of this album ("Alabama," "The Promise," and "Your Lady") is almost at the same high level.

If you love John Coltrane, or just like him a little bit, you will instantly fall in love with this album, just as I did. This is a record for fans of Trane's early and late periods alike. Any true lover of jazz will appreciate this beautiful music. Alice Coltrane A Monastic Trio. Sure, the sound quality isn't pristine studio-level, but it's the feeling of the music that counts. A lot of people consider Live At Birdland one of Coltrane's best records (including studio recordings). Trust me, it's worth it. rhyno January 1st 2007. This album is good needless to say (It's Coltrane live for god sake) But inferior to One Down One Up: Live at the Half Note, Live in Japan, and Live at the Antibes Jazz Festival. The 39 minute (theres not even a bass solo (!)) version of Afro Blue on Live in Japan is mind blowing and orgasmic
An album of previously unheard original compositions by the legendary jazz saxophonist has been discovered 55 years after its recording. Sonny Rollins, a peer of Coltrane’s and also regarded as one of the greatest jazz saxophonists of all time, described the discovery as like finding a new room in the Great Pyramid. Among the seven tracks are two completely unheard original compositions, called Untitled Original 11383 and Untitled Original 11386, both of which are played on soprano saxophone
