Mendelssohn: Greatest Hits. CD - Sony Classical, Sony Music Distribution. As part of Sony's revamped greatest-hits series, this album of classics by Felix Mendelssohn presents many of the same compositions featured in earlier releases of the line, only this time with a slightly modified roster of artists.

Words & Music: John Mellencamp's Greatest Hits is a greatest hits album by American rock and roll artist John Mellencamp. This 2-disc set was released October 19, 2004 on the Island and UTV Records labels. It is a retrospective of Mellencamp's career at the time of its release, and features at least one song from each of his studio albums released between 1978's A Biography and 2003's Trouble No More. Two songs, "Walk Tall" and "Thank You," were recorded exclusively for this album.

If Mendelssohn's early progress had been nothing short of phenomenal, no one could have predicted what was shortly to follow: an astonishingly accomplished String Octet in 1825 and, only a year later, the magical overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream, arguably two of the most stunning displays of youthful talent in western music. In gratitude, he dedicated his ‘Scottish’ Symphony to the Queen. British people quickly took Felix Mendelssohn into their hearts. Indeed, such was the 37-year-old Mendelssohn's impact in England that in 1846 he directed the first performance of his new oratorio, Elijah, as the chief attraction of the Birmingham Festival. In March 1847 Mendelssohn's sister Fanny died, prematurely dealing an incalculable emotional blow to the composer. He never fully recovered, and following a slight stroke died in November of the same year.

Mendelssohn’s family came from a wealthy Jewish background – his grandfather was a famous Jewish philosopher, Moses Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn’s father, Abraham, decided to renounce his Jewish faith and so added the name ‘Bartholdy’ to their surname saying, ‘there can no more be a Christian Mendelssohn than there can be a Jewish Confucius’. He became a banker after moving to Berlin from Hamburg. Another quotable quote from Mendelssohn’s father was that he was, ‘formerly the son of my father, and now the father of my son’

Nocturne from Midsummer Night's Dream. On Wings of Song (Auf Flugeln des Gesanges) from Six Songs, Op. 34, No. 2.

Mendelssohn's music, which portrays all manner of fairies, humans, and lovers crossing paths, is conducted by Previn with just the right light-hearted touch it needs. If you like the Midsummer Overture, you will most likely enjoy this recording. If you love both Mendelssohn and the play "A Midsummer Night's Dream" you should probably watch the old black & white production starring James Cagney, Olivia de Havilland, and Mickey Rooney. Andre Previn was at his freshest and most involved in 1976 when he made his acclaimed recording of Mendelssohn's complete Midsummer Night's Dream music, all 57 min. worth. It's become fashionable to include some spoken dialogue (as Abbado does on his Sony recording with the Berlin Phil. so that we can capture the melding of Mendelssohn with Shakespeare.
