Ivor Bolton conducts the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with tremendous elan: theatrically and musically, this is one of Glyndebourne's finest shows of recent years. There is nothing safe about this show. It's a knockout that brings the work blazingly alive and transforms bewigged pieties into high human drama. The Daily Telegraph). This was one of the best things we have seen at Glyndebourne, but what Handel would have made of this production, heaven only knows. Barrie Kosky's direction was wonderful and the choreography full of energy; the chorus needed to be very fit!

The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment under Ivor Bolton sparkles from the pit with period panache, and designer Katrin Lea Tag’s ‘exuberant costumes’ (The Times ) set the Old Testament story in Handel’s time, with a witty twinge of the contemporary. Ivor Bolton (born 17 May 1958) is an English conductor and harpsichordist. Bolton was born in Blackrod, England. He studied at Clare College, Cambridge (1976–80) and was conducting scholar at the Royal College of Music (1980–81). He later trained as a répétiteur at the National Opera Studio and was appointed conductor of Schola Cantorum of Oxford. Bolton was Assistant Chorus Master and staff conductor from 1982–84 for Glyndebourne Festival Opera.

Ivor Bolton leads the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with a cast of distinguished Handelians and Glyndebourne favourites including the commanding Christopher Purves in the title role, last season’s virtuosic Rinaldo, Iestyn Davies and acclaimed soprano Lucy Crowe, as well as the elegant young American tenor Paul Appleby, making his UK debut. A madcap production of Handel's Saul with top-of-the-range singing returns to Glyndebourne Festival Opera. When the Australian director Barrie Kosky burst on to the elegant scene of Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 2015 with his action-packed jamboree Saul, life at the East Sussex opera house was never going to be quite the same. Kosky has a good ear for music – surprising how many directors seem not to have – as his current, all-singing, all-dancing Carmen at the Royal Opera House demonstrates. His Saul is an explosion of song, movement and visual effects, a rumbustious old master oil painting come to life.

Saul – for director Barrie Kosky’s first show there – could, in its very different way, prove as memorable as Sellars’s production has been. Christopher Purves is astonishingly physical in the central role of Saul; he may not have any of the oratorio’s greatest arias, but everything he does is freighted with meaning. The way in which his envy of the triumphant David morphs into murderous hatred is graphically charted right up to his confrontation with John Graham Hall’s pendulous-breasted Witch of Endor, still crazily suckling after all these years. Ivor Bolton conducts the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with tremendous elan: theatrically and musically, this is one of Glyndebourne’s finest shows of recent years. At Glyndebourne, Lewes, Sussex, until 29 August.
