Australia's Magic Dirt managed to secure some impressive touring partners in the mid-'90s, sharing stages with bands like Sonic Youth, Pavement, and Dinosaur J. .While the sloppy, distorted rock of their self-titled album doesn't have a whole lot in common with these first two bands, there is some appeal of J. Mascis and company lurking in the overdriven riffs and loosely pop melodies packed into Magic Dirt.
Beast (Magic Dirt album). Beast is a mini-album by from Australian rock-grunge band Magic Dirt. Produced by Magic Dirt and Lindsay Gravina at Birdland Studios, Melbourne. All songs written & arranged by Magic Dirt.
In their infancy, though, Magic Dirt were a much gnarlier proposition, one that pulled various strains of scabrous ’90s guitar rock-from the apocalyptic screech of Sonic Youth and the constant unrest of early PJ Harvey to the grooving grunge of the Singles soundtrack-into their vortex. With Signs of Satanic Youth, we hear a band taking the tentative first steps out of the murky underground only to get pulled right back in, a tug-of-war that would arguably make Magic Dirt the only band in the ’90s who felt at home opening shows for Pavement and Silverchair.
