The Ian Campbell Folk Group were one of the most popular and respected folk groups of the British folk revival of the 1960s. The group made many appearances on radio, television, and at national and international venues and festivals. They performed a mixture of British traditional folk music and new material, including compositions by Campbell. Much of their popularity flowed from the variety of their performance which included a mixture of solos, group vocals and instrumentals.

Ian Campbell, who has died from cancer aged 79, was a leading singer in the British folk revival of the 1960s, and one of only a few folk artists to have had a song in the singles charts. His group's recording of The Times They Are a-Changin' reached no 42 in 1965. Campbell was recognised at this year's BBC Radio 2 Folk awards for his outstanding contribution to traditional music. With the award in his hand, he launched unscheduled into a short, unaccompanied, traditional song, Rattlin' Roarin' Willie. Campbell was born in Aberdeen  . The group became one of the most popular, respected and influential of the folk revival. Their first recording was an EP, Ceilidh at the Crown, in 1962. The following year they were signed by Transatlantic and made This Is the Ian Campbell Folk Group, the first of their many albums.

In 1967 he joined the Ian Campbell Folk Group, where he switched to stand-up bass, learnt to play the mandolin and acquired his affection for folk music By early 1969 he had moved back to electric bass with The Beast, with Cozy Powell and Dave Clempson, before the latter left for Colosseum. In 1985 Pegg, Nicol and Mattacks were also free and the trio decided to make an album of new material for the band to play at the Cropredy Festival, using the Woodworm studio and label. The result was Gladys' Leap (1985), which was generally well received in the music and national press, but caused some tension with Swarbrick who refused to play any of the new material at the 1985 Cropredy Festival.

The Ian Campbell Group was a renowned English folk group. Initially formed in 1956 in Birmingham as the Clarion Skiffle Group, the band was renamed the Ian Campbell Folk Group in 1958 and became one of the most respected, popular and influential folk groups of the British folk scene of the 1960s. Led by folk legend Ian Campbell (born 10 June 1933 in in Aberdeen, Scotland; died 24 November 2012), the band at times included Dave Swarbrick and Dave Pegg (the two of whom would later feature in folk-rock pioneers Fairport Convention).
