This album was always sort of a joke among Carole King's serious fans, containing 12 songs drawn from six albums, and liner notes that fail even to acknowledge the existence of Writer, her one pre-Tapestry solo LP. A Natural Woman supplanted it later, and the addition of two live cuts, "Eventually" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" from the Carnegie Hall concert on the 1999 reissue (Ode/Epic/Legacy 65846), doesn't extended the range or depth of the selection sufficiently.

King's career as a songwriter is so expansive that it dwarfs even the monster sales figures of her classic 1971 solo juggernaut, Tapestry, which currently tops 25 million and counting. King was a musical prodigy, selling melodies to New York City publishing companies while she was still in high school.

Unfortunately, HER GREATEST HITS is rather unfairly skewed towards that towering album, with five of the 14 tracks, counting a live take of "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," coming from it. While songs like "So Far Away" and "It's Too Late" are unimpeachable, this collection unintentionally denigrates King's other fine albums, such as 1973's FANTASY, which is only represented by the lovely, hymn-like "Believe In Humanity.
