For Squirrels was an alternative rock band based out of Gainesville, Florida, founded in 1992 and changing their name to Subrosa in 1996 before disbanding in 2001. Their 1995 single "Mighty . became an alternative rock radio hit about three months after a touring van accident that claimed the lives of founding members Jack Vigliatura IV and Bill White, along with tour manager Tim Bender, while the band was on the cusp of national recognition. After touring and establishing a following, the band signed with Sony/550 Music and recorded the album Example with producer Nick Launay (at the time known for working with Midnight Oil, Talking Heads and Kate Bush), which was set to be released on October 3, 1995.
For Squirrels – Example. Label: 550 Music – BK 67150, Epic Records Group – BK 67150. Despite knowing nothing of the band's demise or history otherwise, this album had a huge footprint in the formation of my musical tastes as a teenager. Example gathers a lot from the early part of the decade, drawing comparisons to bands like Nirvana and Weezer, but still maintaining a sound that was also unique. For Squirrels eschewed the popular apathy or glibness of their time and put out an honest record full of hooks and toe-tapping songs. The worst of it is only that we'll never get to see the continued trajectory of the band on this record

Example was For Squirrels' debut album, but also, due to the tragedy which killed two of the bandmembers in 1996, it was the only album that featured their original lineup. casts a huge shadow over Example, with its jangly guitars and glorious melodies. Indeed, John Vigliatura's singing sits comfortably somewhere between Michael Stipe's drone and Sunny Day Real Estate frontman Jeremy Enigk's nasal whine.

This song was the only single released off of the album Example and is about the death of Kurt Cobain. On September 8, 1995, the band was involved in a car crash that left lead singer John Jack Vigliatura and bassist Bill White dead. The surviving band members decided to go ahead with the album and single release. The album peaked at 171 on the Billboard 200, but the single was a minor college radio/alternative hit and drove sales. Written By Bill White, Jack Vigliatura & Travis Tooke. Release Date October 3, 1996. Example For Squirrels.
