Thembi is the seventh album by free-jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, released in 1971. The album is named after Sanders's son. Sanders moved away from the long, intense compositions of his solo albums and produced an album of shorter tracks. He and other musicians played a large variety of instruments. Sanders played tenor, alto, and soprano saxophone, bailophone (African thumb piano), small percussion instruments, and a cow horn.

It is strange that two of the most striking albums made by saxophonist Pharoah Sanders during the first flush of late 1960s/early 1970s astral jazz have been so often overlooked in reissue series. Thembi inhabits this territory over four of its six tracks, but steps out of it on the other two. The album was recorded during two sessions-in Los Angeles in November 1970 (tracks 1-3), and in New York City in January 1971 (tracks 4-6)-with some changes in personnel.

Cymbal – James Jordan. Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone – Pharoah Sanders (tracks: A1 to A3, B2, B3). Bass – Cecil McBee. Bells, Percussion – Pharoah Sanders (tracks: A1 to A3). Cymbal, Percussion – Cecil McBee (tracks: A1 to A3). Drums, Bells, Maracas, Percussion – Clifford Jarvis (tracks: A1 to A3). Electric Piano, Claves, Percussion – Lonnie Liston Smith (tracks: A1 to A3). Engineer – Lillian Douma, Tom Flye.

Thembi is a 1971 album by free-jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. In this album, named after Sanders's son, the saxophonist moved away from the intense, lengthy, percussion-heavy jams he'd been pursuing in his solo work up to that point, and produced a record made up of shorter tracks, often with a more light and breezy feel.

More of Pharoah Sanders‘ catalog is being reissued. After Anthology Records last year saw the vinyl reissues of the albums Tauhid, Jewels of Thought and Deaf Dumb Blind, Impulse!/UMe has announced a new vinyl reissue of his 1971 album, Thembi. The spiritual jazz classic hasn’t been released on vinyl since 1987, and after more than 30 years it seems like it’s probably due to be put back into circulation.

Recorded with two different ensembles, Thembi was a departure from the slowly developing, side-long, mantra-like grooves Pharoah Sanders had been pursuing for most of his solo career. It's musically all over the map but, even if it lacks the same consistency of mood as many of Sanders' previous albums, it does offer an intriguingly wide range of relatively concise ideas, making it something of an anomaly in Sanders' prime period.

Pharoah Sanders (born Farrell Sanders, October 13, 1940) is an American jazz saxophonist. Saxophonist Ornette Coleman once described him as "probably the best tenor player in the world". Emerging from John Coltrane's groups of the mid-1960s, Sanders is known for his overblowing, harmonic, and multiphonic techniques on the saxophone, as well as his use of "sheets of sound"

Pharoah Sanders was an integral part of John Coltrane's final band. He is heavily influenced by that experience. Some of his songs are structured and mellow as well. I have loved the music of Pharoah Sanders since I first heard this album in the early 1970s. The variety of themes, instruments, beats, transitions and free jazz moods puts this above his other work to me.
