Samuel Kerridge and DVA Damas’ Taylor Burch have teamed up for a new album, The Other. The project features spoken word performances from Taylor Burch inspired by avant-garde icon Jean Cocteau’s performance in Jean Cocteau s’adress. l’an 2000 and production from Kerridge, and will be released on Regis’ Downwards imprint. The duo will also launch an audiovisual show to accompany the project in collaboration with London-based filmmaker Daisy Dickinson which is described by Downwards as a visual, speech and sound based piece
Samuel Kerridge and DVA Damas' Taylor Burch have announced a new collaborative album titled The Other. The album marks the first time Kerridge and Burch have collaborated on record, and sees Burch contributing spoken word vocals to Kerridge's productions. An audiovisual project with film director Daisy Dickinson involving projections on pieces of semi-transparent fabric will also run alongside the album. You can watch a teaser for that and the album above
This one benefits strongly from volume - play loud. Opening his sound up to kindred spirits, and allowing more space and time for his sounds to take hold, ‘The Other’ locates a newfound sense of nuance and context in Kerridge’s music.
Burch plays narrator on The Other, her icy prognostications hanging forebodingly over Kerridge’s tracks. The beats here - named ‘Transmissions’ - give off the impression that the sounds of this record are at war with each other. Drums and breakbeats clatter into one another, chilling synths hang in the air, and alien hums of sub bass punch through the mix. It’s an arresting listen, one that recalls Prurient and Belief Defect.
Marking Samuel Kerridge’s first album proper, The Other brings together a collaboration with Taylor Burch (DVA Damas/Tropic Of Cancer). Written and produced exclusively in 2018, the music within the LP has been sculpted in tandem with Taylor’s spoken word
