referencing Queen Of The Organ, LP, Album, AS-81. Two things surprised me from the get-go, this laidback emancipated number was recorded live, and secondly, where along with Stanley Turrentine, Bob Cranshaw and Otis Finch, the compact disc reissue offers up four additional tracks that never found their way to vinyl. One would assume that Queen Of The Organ would be all about the Shirley Scott and her organ, but it’s more, it’s a delicate interplay of sounds and movement that will ride high listen after listen.
This CD reissue brings back all of the music previously put out on the two-LP set The Great Live Sessions with the exception of one number ("Shirley's Shuffle") left out due to lack of space; with over 70 minutes of music, one cannot complain too much about the omission. Overall, this is a pretty definitive live set featuring organist Shirley Scott, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Otis "Candy" Finch, one of the great soul-jazz combos of the 1960s
Shirley Scott (March 14, 1934 – March 10, 2002) was an American jazz organist. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Scott studied trumpet and piano in school. As a performer in the 1950s, she played the Hammond B-3 organ. Her recordings with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis included the hit "In the Kitchen". Influenced by gospel and blues, she played soul jazz in the 1960s with Stanley Turrentine, who became her husband during the same decade; the couple divorced in 1971.
Queen of the Organ is a live album by American jazz organist Shirley Scott recorded in 1964 for the Impulse! label. The CD reissue added four additional performances from the same concert as bonus tracks. Live album by. Shirley Scott. A Chip Off the Old Block is an album by American jazz saxophonist Stanley Turrentine. The album features tunes associated with bandleader Count Basie, and was released by Blue Note. Music was performed by Turrentine with organist Shirley Scott, trumpeter Blue Mitchell, bassist Earl May, and drummer Al Harewood. The CD reissue includes two alternate recordings, with Ben Dixon replacing Harewood at the drums and the addition of trombonist Tom McIntosh and saxophonist Charles Davis.

Classic Shirley Scott – in her best mode of the 60s! Here's the reasons: 1. The group features husband Stanley Turrentine on tenor, adding in some nice extra tones to Shirley's usual trio! 2. The rhythm section is Bob Cranshaw and Otis Finch – surely one of Shirley's best. 3. The set was recorded live, in the Front Froom in Newark, with a real down-home gutbucket approach that's different from some of the other Impulse albums. 4. Tracks are long, with plenty of room for soloing – even moreso than some of Shirley's other records of the time. One of Shirley Scott's trippy albums for Cadet, when she was being recorded with groups that were larger than usual – which was, in our opinion, a good thing, since her organ solos were backed up by more than the usual bass and drums, and she was given a more creative setting to open up i. .LP, Vinyl record album.
