Lovers rock is a style of reggae music noted for its romantic sound and content. While love songs had been an important part of reggae since the late 1960s, the style was given a greater focus and a name in London in the mid-1970s.
Ride the Tiger is the debut studio album by American indie rock band Yo La Tengo. It was released in 1986 by record label Coyote. The song "Big Sky" is a cover of The Kinks' song from their album The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society. Lovers Rock is the fifth studio album by English band Sade, released on 13 November 2000 by Epic Records. Following the release of Love Deluxe (1992), the band began an eight-year hiatus, during which time some band members began recording with American musician Maxwell and produced his debut album, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite. Following the group's Love Deluxe World Tour, Stuart Matthewman, Paul Denman and Andrew Hale formed the group Sweetback.
The Prophets - "Repatriation Rock" (bonus track). The album is something of a roots classic, with Yabby You's seductive, soul-fired vocal numbers being joined by delay-laden heavy dub revisions by King Tubby.
The vocals on Lovers Rock are unmistakably sensual and enchanting. Guitarist Stuart Matthewman steers clear of the crunchy electric sound that was his signature on Lovers Rock, the one exception being "Somebody Already Broke My Heart," which has some tasty, understated percussive palm muting in the choruses. From an instrumental perspective, Lovers Rock leans a bit more to the electronic side, but technology doesn't dampen the atmosphere and simple beauty of the music. Not surprisingly, the focus continues to be the sweet, often mournful melodies of a unique pop vocalist.
While never quite prevalent in Jamaica, lovers rock was adopted as an alternate style by several major roots-reggae figures, including John Holt, Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, and Freddie McGregor, who used it to broaden their repertoires and appeal to wider audiences. Dancehall vocalist Sugar Minott adopted a similar tactic during the '80s when he relocated from Jamaica to the .
