Peter Grimes is an opera by Benjamin Britten, with a libretto adapted by Montagu Slater from the narrative poem, "Peter Grimes", in George Crabbe's book The Borough. It was first performed at Sadler's Wells in London on 7 June 1945, conducted by Reginald Goodall, and was the first of Britten's operas to be a critical and popular success. Britten, being a native of Suffolk, strongly identified with the tragic story of the Aldeburgh fisherman Peter Grimes. This opera was first conceived while Britten was in California. Philip Langridge, Janice Cairns, Alan Opie, Ann Howard. David Atherton, English National Opera Orchestra and Chorus. DVD: Kultur Cat: 2902. Philip Langridge, Janice Watson, Alan Opie, Ameral Gunson.

The Sadler's Wells Opera was renamed the English National Opera in November 1974, after relocating from Sadler's Wells. And so Sadler's Wells Orchestra also changed its name, to The English National Opera Orchestra. It is the orchestra of the English National Opera (ENO), the opera company based in London and headquartered at the London Coliseum in St. Martin's Lane. It is one of the two principal opera companies in London. ENO's productions are sung in English. Benjamin Britten, Philip Langridge, Janice Cairns, Chorus And Orchestra Of The English National Opera, David Atherton (2), Tim Albery, Barrie Gavin - Peter Grimes ‎(DVD-V, RE, PAL). Digital Classics DVD, Edizioni Del Prado.

The sorely missed Philip Langridge is similarly magnificent, portraying Vere's affection for Budd and inner torment at having to pass the death sentence on him with great subtlety and humanity. His look of desolation in the final scene is unforgettable. Claggart is played by the late lamented Richard van Allen, one of the great character actors in British opera, and presents him from the outset as the epitome of heartless oppression, revelling in his freedom to mete out draconian punishments against the sailors. It is the work of the ENO and is directed conservatively by Tim Albery. I presume that it was filmed in the Colliseum, ENO's house, but there is no data. This is reflected in the conducting by David Atherton - perfectly servicable, but without any of the bite and fire that Britten himself, or Hickox, to name but two, have brought to this score. The actual procution itself reflects this rather bland impression.

Duration: 147 minutes. Opera in three acts and a prologue. Perhaps more importantly, the opera also introduces many of the fundamental dramatic themes which characterise Britten’s entire operatic output: the individual against the mass, and the corruption of innocence. Reproduced by kind permission of the Britten-Pears Library. Dramatic, Poetic, Tragic.

From the English National Opera 1994: Tim Albery’s startlingly original treatment of Britten’s vivid tragedy was hailed as a landmark production when it was staged at the English National Opera. The critics were unanimous in their praise of Philip Langridge’s remarkable portrayal of Grimes, and the whole company, including Janice Cairns, Alan Opie and Ann Howard, won countless accolades, as did the inspired musical direction of conductor David Atherton  . Composer: Benjamin Britten. Orchestra: English National Opera Orchestra and Chorus. Artists: Philip Langridge, Janice Cairns, Alan Opie, Ann Howard, Andrew Greenan. Production year: 1994.

Peter Grimes - unlike much of Britten's previous work, which was praised or written off as "clever" - would consciously appeal to deeper and more sincere emotions. It was a fortuitous moment. Quietly, during the war, British public policy had been considering the place art and music would play in a postwar society, and had started to engage with the idea of state patronage. A new British opera that embodied the national character would be just the thing to open a new opera house. Now Peter Grimes is returning to English National Opera, the direct heir of the Sadler's Wells company that premiered it. The whole notion of a single work taking on the burden of a national opera, rather like a national epic, now seems inconceivable. When Britten attempted it again, with Gloriana, commissioned for the coronation of Elizabeth II, the results were less successful.
