Album · 1991 · 23 Songs. The Chieftains assemble a diverse cast for this Christmas special. St. Stephen’s Day Murders is a comic original, written by Elvis Costello and Paddy Moloney, depicting family holiday strife; the rest are traditional, but hardly predictable. Kate and Anna McGarrigle make Il Est Né, Ca Berger heavenly, Marianne Faithfull brings grit to the fiddle-strewn I Saw Three Ships a Sailing, and Rickie Lee Jones is full of yearning on O Holy Night. Like the perfect Christmas, The Bells of Dublin is rich with bonhomie. The Bells of Dublin The Chieftains.

The twelve bells of Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin, date back to 1738, and are rung twice every Sunday and also peal on special occasions such as the inauguration of the President. As a tradition the people of Dublin City gather in Christchurch Place to hear the bells ‘ring-in’ the new year. The bells of Dublin are part of the fabric of life in Dublin, as are their ‘voice’ sounds and patterns, and this has been incorporated into the opening piece, and made into an underlying theme for the proceedings.
