Sontag then goes on to stress the degree to which Arbus herself seems to have thought of her work as a kind of anthropological espionage, as war photographs - combining voyeurism and danger: ‘Everything is so superb and breathtaking,’ she quotes Arbus as saying. I am creeping forward on my belly like they do in the war movie. ’m not sure if there are limits.
The swing pianist turned ballad vocalist had a prolific chart run in the 1950s. Six of his UK hits are featured here. When I Fall in Love" (Victor Young, Edward Heyman) – 3:11. Unforgettable" (Irving Gordon) – 3:28. The Very Thought of You" (Ray Noble) – 3:48. Too Young" (Sidney Lippman, Sylvia Dee) – 3:25. Let's Fall in Love" (Harold Arlen, Ted Koehler) – 2:47.
Turning her back on her wealthy, established family, Diane Arbus falls in love with Lionel Sweeney, an enigmatic mentor who introduces Arbus to the marginalized people who help her become one of the most revered photographers of the twentieth century. Director: Steven Shainberg. Writers: Erin Cressida Wilson, Patricia Bosworth (book).
Diane Arbus started taking photographs in the early forties and continued to do so erratically for over a decade. During those years, she worked as an art director for fashion photography shoots for which her husband, Allan Arbus, did the photographs. He has lectured extensively, curated numerous exhibitions, such as Photography and the American Civil War (2013), and published essays on a wide range of artists including Carleton Watkins, Thomas Eakins, Walker Evans, Helen Levitt, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander, William Eggleston, and Stephen Shore. –––– Images: Lady on a bus, . 1957 and detail of The Backwards Man in his hotel room, .
My favourite thing, Diane Arbus once said, is to go where I’ve never been. References to what Lubow calls Arbus’s multivalent sex life are scattered throughout Diane Arbus: Portrait of a Photographer, somewhat belying the book’s matter-of-fact title. We know from previous biographers – the scholarly Patricia Bosworth and the psychoanalytical William Todd Schultz – that Arbus’s transgressive art and life were intertwined to a complex degree: she sometimes had sex with some of the so-called freaks she photographed and once took part in an orgy when shooting a story on swingers. Lubow digs deeper, but without shedding much more light than either of his predecessors.
