It was composed in 1953 at the invitation of the BBC Religious Broadcasting Department and was broadcast from St Michael’s Cornhill, London, in October that year by the BBC Singers under the direction of George Thalben Ball. In this exciting new collaboration, George McPhee conducts Glasgow Orchestral Society for the first time, having previously played with the orchestra as guest soloist in the Saint-Saens Symhony No 3 (The Organ) and in Poulenc's Organ Concerto. Here he brings the Choir of Paisley Abbey together with the orchestra and the programme is a beautifully balanced blend of orchestral pieces, a cappella choral works and large scale choral/orchestral favourites by Elgar and Parry.
