Lakmé is an opera in three acts by Léo Delibes to a French libretto by Edmond Gondinet and Philippe Gille. The score, written from 1881–1882, was first performed on 14 April 1883 by the Opéra-Comique at the (second) Salle Favart in Paris, with stage decorations designed by Auguste Alfred Rubé and Philippe Chaperon (Act I), Eugène Louis Carpezat and (Joseph-)Antoine Lavastre (Act II), and Jean-Baptiste Lavastre (Act III).
Leo Delibes's Lakme, an Opera in 3 acts featuring Mady Mesple, Charles Burles, Roger Soyer, Danielle Millet, Jean-Christopher BenoitkBernadette Antoine, Monique Linval, Agnes Disney, and Joseph Peyron with the orchestra conducted by Alain Lombard. When I first acquired this recording on vinyl I knew Mady Mesplé only from her brief but memorable performance as Sophie in the Prêtre recording of Werther. Her voice is unmistakable, unique in tone, coloration and technique. Mesplé was so closely associated with the rôle that any other recording is judged by this one, and on the whole this recording does succeed. Compared to Sutherland, Mesplé is a paragon of diction, and in an opera like Lakmé, that is definitely a virtue.

Delibes wrote the score during 1881-82 with its first performance on 14 April 1883 at the Opéra Comique in Paris. Set in British India in the mid-19th century, Lakmé is based on the 1880 novel Rarahu ou Le Mariage de Loti by Pierre Loti. The opera includes the popular Flower Duet (Sous le dôme épais) for sopranos performed in Act 1 by the lead character Lakmé, the daughter of a Brahmin priest, and her servant Mallika
