John Ellis: By A Thread by John Kelman, published on May 14, 2006. That's not to say there isn't a lot of gear-shifting on By A Thread. But by sticking with a consistent lineup, rather than augmenting it with a variety of high-profile guests, Ellis has created a record where his strength as a writer can evolve along with a group sound. Pianist Aaron Goldberg is the only holdover, and he's as comfortable with the modal vamping that forms the core of "Old Man -despite its misleading Indian-inflected introduction-as he is the greasy groove of "Moore's Alphabet, a tune that could easily fit into the Charlie Hunter repertoire
On By a Thread, Ellis' music (all nine selections are his originals) has its own quirky logic, like that of Wayne Shorter, although his compositions are also reminiscent of the Keith Jarrett Quintet of the '70s when it featured tenor-saxophonist Dewey Redman. The music is part blues and part gospel but also utilizes unusual structures and is consistently unpredictable. Aaron Goldberg (mostly on electric piano) and guitarist Mike Moreno have their solo spots, but John Ellis is the main star, both in his writing and in his distinctive playing.

Saxophonist John Ellis first made his name as the sax foil in Charlie Hunter’s band, from which he has gained some fine ideas about how to balance body-shaking groove and brainy grit.
By A Thread is a 2006 CD by John Ellis. Released on 9 May, 2006, Ellis is joined by Aaron Goldberg, Mike Moreno, Terreon Gully, and Reuben Rogers. This is a Hyena release. In contrast to the schizophrenic nature of John Ellis’ previous effort, One Foot in the Swamp (Hyena Records, 2005), By A Thread is an altogether more coherent affair. Ellis’ robust playing on soprano and tenor, with detours on flute and bass clarinet, leads the way throughout, but this date generally has more of an emphasis on the collective and the compositional aspects.
