Au revoir les enfants is an autobiographical 1987 film written, produced and directed by Louis Malle. The film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. During the winter of 1943–44, Julien Quentin, a student at a Carmelite boarding school in occupied France, is returning to school from vacation. He acts tough to the students at the school, but he is actually a pampered boy who misses his mother deeply.

Au Revoir Les Enfants. The story of a young Jewish boy, Jean Kippelstein aka Jean Bonnet, living under a false identity in a Catholic residential school in Nazi-occupied France. The headmaster knows of his background and is part of the conspiracy to protect him. Jean befriends a classmate, Julien Quentin. who learns of Jean's secret but keeps that information to himself. When Jean's true identity is revealed, the boy, the headmaster and others are taken away by the Gestapo, never to be seen again

Louis Malle's 1987 masterpiece 'Au Revoir, Les Enfants' has had much said about it due to its personal nature for Malle. When the movie played at Telluride, Malle cried, tears streaming down his cheeks. I knew the first time i saw the film that it was autobiographical, so perhaps this helped make the film affect me a little more strongly. Goodbye children" is to director Louis Malle what "The Pianist" has been to Roman Polanski. These are movies that dealt with intimate matters related to painful childhood experiences, both taking place in occupied Europe during WW2. In both cases, it is palpable that they were movies that these directors had planned to make for a long time, but they waited until they had achieved a considerable degree of recognition at the end of their careers, so that they would feel self assured enough to carry their project out.

The movie "Au Revoir Les Enfants" takes place in the years of 1943 - 1944. At this time in history, a cruel event took place, and this event was WW2. WW2 first started in Germany with the scapegoat theory, where people chose to blame the minority for the problems and at this time the minority had included Jews. German soldiers known as Nazis would go into the homes of Jews and take them away to brutal concentration camps. This action spread into different parts of Europe and one of these parts was France, as it is seen in the movie "Au Revoir Les Enfants".
