Visit the official Pet Shop Boys Shop here. On 10 October 1988 Introspective was released. So-called because all the songs, although it's a dance album, are introspective. The title was chosen after considering and dismissing f, Dogmatic, Bounce and Hello!. They reckon Introspective sounds serious, like an art exhibition: Nick Rhodes, said Chris at the time, will be so jealous.

Featuring a mere six tracks, most of them well over six minutes in length, Introspective was a move back to the clubs for the Pet Shop Boys. Over the course of the album, they incorporated various dance techniques that were currently in vogue, including Latin rhythms and house textures. The title isn't entirely an arch joke, however. Like Actually, Introspective was an exploration of distant, disaffected yuppies, which naturally resulted in a good deal of self-analyzation. Melodically, the essential song structures were as strong and multi-layered as the previous album, yet that was hard.

Our writers are picking their favourite albums ever – with a view that you might do the same. As Neil Tennant has helpfully pointed out, this album is called Introspective because all its songs are introspective.

English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys have released 13 studio albums, three live albums, eight compilation albums, four remix albums, three soundtrack albums, two extended plays and 55 singles. The duo's debut single, "West End Girls", was first released in 1984 but failed to chart in most regions.

Introspective is the fourth album, the third of entirely new music, by the UK electronic music group Pet Shop Boys. It was first released on October 11, 1988 and is the Pet Shop Boys' best-selling album, selling over . million copies worldwide. It is so named because "all the songs, although it's a dance album, are introspective". The album was also unusual in that it completely reversed the typical process by which pop/dance acts released singles: Instead of releasing an album of regular-length (3-5 minute) songs, then releasing more lengthy remixes of those songs on subsequent singles, "Introspective" was released as an LP consisting of songs that all lasted six minutes or more. Songs from the album that were released as singles were released as shorter, more radio-friendly mixes.
