Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument. Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument (Amharic:ኃይሉ መርጊያና የመሣረያ ቅንብሮቹ), also known as Shemonmuanaye, is a 1985 studio album by Ethiopian jazz musician Hailu Mergia, formerly of the Walias Band.

The ruling Derg regime imposed curfews, banning citizens from the streets after midnight until 6am. But that didn’t stop some people from dancing and partying thorough the night.
To my surprise, Hailu Mergia (layer and bandleader of Ethiopian origin) sent me his only copy of this cassette-only release from 1978, Wede Harer Guzo. I knew of Dahlak Band but I didn’t know he recorded with them. The soulful, smokey reinterpretations of seminal Ethiopian standards, along with two Mergia originals, make a considerable impact on your heart, if only you’re still human in these strange and challenging times.
Hailu Mergia, once among the most beloved musicians in Ethiopia, spent the past two decades working as a cab driver in Washington, . But he never stopped playing, and he's back at it again with a new album. htm. n African Funk Pioneer Gets a Second Chance on a Global Stage. The Ethiopian pianist Hailu Mergia, 71, had become a taxi driver.
Hailu Mergia Lala Belu Josh Gray, February 23rd, 2018 13:14. The long forgotten Ethio-jazz legend unveils the record no one, especially the man himself, expected him to be releasing in 2018. Recorded with the help of his well-oiled live rhythm section of Tony Buck on drums and Mike Majkowski on double bass, the album puts two revitalised Ethiopian classics ( ‘Gum Gum’ and ‘Anchihoye Lene’) between four original tracks. The first of these is ‘Tizita’, a three-movement journey that begins as a wistful accordion lament to Mergia’s long-lost homeland and ends as a frenzied free jazz tribute to the musical legacy of his adopted city.
The first, Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument: Shemonmuanaye, was originally recorded in Washington in 1985, after the Walias Band’s dissolution. The work of a one-man band, this mirage of electric piano, mournful synth, pirouetting accordion, and repetitive drum machine felt accordingly dislocated and solitary, with unchanging tempos that felt like no tempo, a kind of astronomical drift. Mergia never stopped writing, and with Lala Belu-his first new full-length in two decades-he’s finally produced an album to stand alongside those golden-era landmarks. While he’s become a remarkably versatile songwriter, the new release contains echoes of the old, full of peculiar details that contrast the sparkly veneer of the jazz trio he’s now fronting.

NotesI dedicate this interpretation of "Yewedeke Abeba" to the thousands of brave men & women, who have and still do wither and die like the unearthed flower, all in the fight to keep our mother land of Ethiopia together. The musical arrangement grew from deep inside me and is but a small contribution in their honor. God bless them for their sacrifice.
