Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters is a 1974 satirical concept album by Robert Calvert, the former frontman of British space-rock band Hawkwind. It consists of a mixture of songs and comic spoken interludes. The concept was based on the German Air Ministry's purchase of the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, colloquially known as the Widowmaker.
Robert Calvert's 1st solo project. A concept album: Music/Theater - Captain Lockheed alternates between octane guzzlers in the classic Hawkwind vein and Monty Python-like vignettes. Title embossed on cover in silver foil print. Aircraft in artwork embossed on both front and back covers of gatefold jacket. This is essentially another Hawkwind album, as many of the members appear on the album, even Dave Brock. Plus Twink, Jim Capaldi, Adrian Wagner, and Arthur Brown make an appearance here. The music regards the German Air Force purchasing the Lockheed F-104 with upgrades that rendered the aircraft unsafe and prone to crashing. Of course take it to Mr. Calvert to give the album a humorous twist, with comedy dialog not unlike Monty Python in between Hawkwind-like songs.

Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters is the solo debut by Robert Calvert, the former singer of the space-rock band Hawkwind. It's a satirical concept album with both songs and spoken interludes based on the story of the poor quality of the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter planes. 180 gram audiophile vinyl. Former singer of Hawkwind. Includes a 4 Booklet With Extensive Liner Notes.
Robert Calvert, a longtime member and lyricist of space pioneers Hawkwind, crafted this record, inspired by the Lockheed bribery scandals. Hardly the stuff of fluff, it’s no surprise that Calvert, who, according to the liner notes, always wanted to join Britain’s Royal Air Force (he even wore . overalls onstage at times during his Hawkwind days) saw the headlines generated by Lockheed’s abysmal legacy surrounding the Starfighter F-104 as creative stimulus . This adds extra tracks which are nice to have because otherwise the album seems like it ends too soon.
