Koussevitsky's famous commission for the Concerto for orchestra was due in large part to Reiner's advocacy, and he was among the first conductors to both perform and record this masterpiece. Beyond this, Reiner's great sympathy for his friend's work extends to the care and attention to detail he gave to the works included here. For all its virtuosity, the concerto is structurally symphonic, and Reiner ensures that the music formally coheres.

I had read about the Concerto for orchestra Fritz Reiner did with the Chicago Symphony in 1955 for a long time and finally got around to listening to it. I found that it lived up to expectations. All three pieces found here receive outstanding performances, making for a highly worthwhile disc – a classic in the good sense. This album is as close to definitive as one can ask. The performances are BEAUTIFUL and the recorded sound is exceptional and hold up even by modern standards. This album is, indeed, one of the great things in life.
