Madala Kunene was born in 1951 in Cato Manor, moving to the township of Kwa-Mashu, near Durban after his family were evicted by the Apartheid government. Despite being born into a family of eminent and fervent academics he refused to spend so much as a day at school - even if it meant taking regular beatings because of it. This signalled Madala's single-minded and uniquely unconventional nature. He started busking on Durban’s beachfront at the age of 7, making his first guitar out of a cooking oil tin and fish gut for the strings, soon becoming a popular performer in the townships. King Of The Zulu Guitar Live Vol 1 (Album).
In 1963, Kunene bought his first real guitar, which he used to imitate the Beatles and the Shadows at weddings. Three years later, he apprenticed himself to Phuthu, a top mbaqanga guitarist, and soon graduated to playing township halls. But there was still an inner restlessness. Kunene wanted to play "my own thing. An especially brilliant performance has been captured on his live solo album King of Zulu Guitar Vol 1. This remarkable album was recorded in one take, outside his home, on a portable DAT recording machine. It is so live that you can even hear the dogs barking in the background. Those who know it treasure it, and Kunene admits that it's his favourite. But if his next album, Kon'ko Man, (on the MELT 2000 label) is second best, it is a close-run thing.

Hailing from the Kwazulu-Natal region, home of the Zulus, Kunene incorporates elements of Zulu culture into his music, including call-and-response passages, and vocal-guitar interplay meant to aid trances and divination. Sometimes solo, and sometimes framed by percussion and additional voices, Kunene’s evocative singing rises from his spiraling acoustic lines, running a through line straight from African history to the center of the listener’s consciousness.
Known as King of the Zulu guitar Madala's playing blends Blues and African Folk.
