Stephen Bruton: Actually, I think there were two epiphanies. I went to a concert where my father was the drummer in one of the jazz groups. My mother asked if there was anything onstage that interested me, and I said, Yeah, and pointed to the guitar. And that’s what happened. Instead of making a three-week album, we made a six-week album, and it sounds like there was more time and thought put into it; it doesn’t have a hurried quality to it. I’ve always wanted to work with Mark, anyway. He’s a great, unique guitar player; he’d been in the Cretones – a band that did an album with Linda Ronstadt back in the ’70s. He doesn’t play any musical cliches, and he and I both occasionally take lessons from Ted Greene, in . Ted is a melodic, chordal, theoretical genius

Stephen Bruton, the Texas-based guitarist and vocalist renowned for his work with Kris Kristofferson, Alejandro Escovedo and many others, died Saturday (May 9) at age 60 due to complications from throat cancer. Bruton was working in Los Angeles with T. Bone Burnett on the film "Crazy Heart," where he was acting as music producer and composer. A recording artist himself, Bruton released five solo records, with "What It Is" debuting in 1993. His latest release was 2005's "From The Five. The funeral will be held in Fort Worth, Texas.

Long before launching a recorded career as a singer/songwriter, Stephen Bruton had amassed a daunting résumé. He had served as a sideman/guitarist, songwriter, or producer for such industry notables as Bonnie Raitt, Delbert McClinton, Bob Dylan, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Hal Ketchum, Christine McVie, T-Bone Burnett, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Patty Loveless, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Alejandro Escovedo. After working with an impressive array of artists for over 20 years, Bruton released his first solo album in the early '90s. Later that decade, he signed to New West Records, the home of such Americana talent as Billy Joe Shaver, the Flatlanders, and Delbert McClinton. Bruton's fourth release, Spirit World, a mixture of blues, country, and rock & roll, came out in early 2002, followed in 2005 by From the Five.

Although best known as a guitar slinger, Stephen Bruton is also a first-class songwriter. Among others, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Jimmy Buffett have recorded his songs.
