The album was shelved due to the fact that Prince's time was taken up with other projects (Under The Cherry Moon, Parade and The Family). Prince liked the idea of releasing an instrumental jazz-funk album under a pseudonym. He finally got round to it in '87, but renamed the project Madhouse and ditched the old Flesh tracks in favor of fresh new recordings. Prince and the Revolution: Dream Factory. Crystal Ball was a 3-LP set to be released in 1986, The set was to consist of various tracks from 1985–1986. Although several Dream Factory tracks were incorporated, this set was to be marketed as a solo album by Prince. Prince worked on a third Madhouse recorded during July–December 1988, with a planned release in early 1989, featuring the cover model Maneca Lightner. The album has never materialized.
The compilation mostly chronicles Madhouse's classic years, from the label's founding through to the late '90s. Many of the best tracks come from Chandler, who released music under a vast array of pseudonyms for the label. The compilation's opening track, "I Loved You," sets the tone. It's an amalgam of joyous chords, thick bassline and raw beats with baritone vocals from Chandler's grandfather. The Chandler-produced Madhouse tracks made in later years are more varied and ambitious, building on the gut-punch thwack that defined the label's style with new sounds and an increased reliance on famous guests. 2003's "Music Is My Friend," featuring the venerable house vocalist Arnold Jarvis, is the most buttery of the Chandler originals, with Jarvis's singing and a meandering organ lending emotional resonance to the track title's sentiment.
Ten Days in a Mad-House is a book by American journalist Nellie Bly. It was initially published as a series of articles for the New York World; Bly later compiled the articles into a book, being published by Ian L. Munro in New York City in 1887. The book was based on articles written while Bly was on an undercover assignment for the New York World, feigning insanity at a women's boarding house, so as to be involuntarily committed to an insane asylum
delivered Madhouse’s 16 album on November 18, just ten months after 8, with bass player Levi Seacer Jr. and keyboardist Matt Fink added to the lineup, real-life musicians from Prince’s recent touring band for his Sign o’ the Times album. Stranger still, that two-month European tour featured Madhouse as the opening act with a slightly different lineup, essentially the 16 assemblage but with longtime Prince associate Dale Alexander on drums. Ironically, many jazz musicians that I know really dug the album and were convinced that Prince was behind it from the very start. Saxophonist James Carter, cause of the greatest buzz in modern jazz since the début of Pulitzer-winning trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, remembers 8 fondly.

The Madhouse (Casa de locos) or Asylum (Manicomio) is an oil-on-panel painting by Francisco de Goya. He produced it between 1812 and 1819. It shows a mental asylum, with its inhabitants in many different poses. Marked by Piranesian and claustrophobic architecture, the painting's only light source is a barred window high up on the wall, clearly meant to repress the figures below
