Panda Bear will release his new album Buoys, the Animal Collective member’s first solo album in four years, in February 2019. Ahead of Buoys‘ arrival, the artist born Noah Lennox also unveiled the album’s breezy first single Dolphin. Buoys also reunites Panda Bear with co-producer Rusty Santos; the pair last worked together on Panda Bear’s breakthrough 2007 solo album Person Pitch. Panda Bear’s previous two albums, 2011’s Tomboy and 2015’s Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper, were co-produced by Spacemen 3’s Pete Sonic Boom Kember.
Panda Bear's solo career has an oddly specific set of expectations from me - expectations one-of-a-kind from other artists. This all has to do with his 2007 album, Person Pitch. Person Pitch instilled a love for a specifically slow, open and distant sound only Panda Bear could seem to make, and that aesthetic has been applied and slightly tweaked on each of his releases since. Unlike Person Pitch, Tomboy and Panda Bear vs. the Grim Reaper felt a lot drier and flatter - the distant aesthetic.
When we interviewed Panda Bear about his new album Buoys, he told us, Person Pitch felt like the start of something new and this one does to. .It’s true: Noah Lennox set a certain template with his 2007 solo opus, one he tweaked in fascinating ways over the past decade. But by 2015’s Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper, he seemed to have run out of ways to tweak that formula.

Panda Bear is the moniker of Noah Lennox, a founding member of Animal Collective and member of Jane. Lennox grew up in the Roland Park section of Baltimore, Maryland. As a child, he played sports, and studied piano and cello. He later sang tenor in his high school chamber choir. After graduation, he attended Boston University but dropped out in 2000 and moved to New York where he dedicated himself to his music.
Noah Lennox's Panda Bear project has always been about making "difficult" music scan as almost radio-friendly, to translate experimental moves to a broad audience with little interest in such things. It's a strategy he learned, at least in part, from sonic forebears like Arthur Russell and Brian Wilson, along with the avant-techno types he reveres. Tomboy, Lennox's fourth solo album as Panda Bear, was mixed with Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember of Spectrum/Spacemen 3. And again, in a way there's little here that's any further out-there than the blissful psychedelia and dream-pop Spacemen 3 and their peers were playing in the late 1980s, a lineage that stretches right back to stuff we.
