As a lyric soprano and aspiring opera singer myself, I have continually found this book inspiring and encouraging. Ms. Fleming candidly looks at the world of an opera singer from many angles. She relates how she came to music, from her childhood as a daughter of musical parents, and charts how hard she had to work to get to the rarified world of the opera star she is today. She does not gloss over the work involved or the insecurities and problems she has faced. Her written voice is real and she gives great snippets of advice throughout the book. Fleming discusses her postgraduate apprenticeship at Julliard in a program called the American Opera Center, and a follow-up Fullbright grant in Germany where she learned to speak German fluently. Fleming pays homage to her mentors (. Renata Scotto, Joan Sutherland, Marilyn Horne, Leontyne Price).

Michael English (American singer). This article is about the American singer. For other people of the same name, see Michael English (disambiguation). His last album with the Singing Americans, Black and White, was one of their most popular. It featured a single English was fairly well known for called "Welcome To Heaven", but success of it was possibly stalled when he left the group in 1985 to join The Gaither Vocal Band as their new lead singer, replacing Gary McSpadden, who moved to singing baritone. The change of groups introduced more people to the southern gospel genre.

Audio Education, Inc. presents Recorded Songs from The American Singer - Book 2

This album was prepared in conjunction with the American Book Company and Decca Records, Inc.

In Book 2, there are three large areas of study in the music program: rote singing, note singing, and rhythmic expression. The records and the book on which they are based represent a unity of material for study in these areas. The same teaching principles outlined in the 'Guide and Accompaniment to Book 2' apply when teaching with records, and most of the recorded songs have been specifically mentioned in that text.

The recorded songs listed under "Notation," 13003 A, follow the teaching pattern outlined in 'Guide and Accompaniments' for this type of music study. Instructions for study are given directly on the records. These are followed by group singing on the part of the children themselves. The record can help the teacher to understand, in advance of classroom activity, how a song should be treated for teaching notation.

The recorded songs grouped under the title "Rhythm Sensing," 13003 B, provide material for developing basic beat. "Indian Songs - Rhythms," 13002 A, and "Rhythms and Games," 13002 B, include other songs adaptable for rhythmic expression. Many of the other rote and note songs may also be used for rhythmic expression through dramatic play, particularly such a record as "Song Stories," 13003 B.
