Various types of jazz-funk-rock fusion comprise the remainder of this collection. The music of Thing, whose sole privately- released album was reissued in its entirety by Porter Records in 2008, reflects the massive influence that Miles Davis' electric music had on many up-and-coming jazz musicians at the time. Led by alto saxophonist and Chicago native Arni Cheatham, Thing's sound is equally informed by the more iconoclastic sounds emerging from his hometown: notably Joseph Jarman, Anthony Braxton, and Sun Ra.

In a sense, the jazz supergroup heard on the album - saxist Joshua Redman, cornetist Ron Miles, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Brian Blade - is paying tribute to a tribute: Old and New Dreams, a quartet of Coleman associates, including Redman’s father Dewey, that performed music written and inspired by their trailblazing maestro in the Seventies and Eighties. Is Starebaby even a jazz album? In some key ways, no. Overall it’s more a work of composition than improvisation, the latest genre-blurring album-length suite from Dan Weiss, a drummer-composer of nimble technique and formidable imagination. But elite jazzers were probably the only ones that could have pulled off Weiss’ latest creation, a dark, intensely dynamic set inspired equally by doom metal and David Lynch. made waves this year with the Impulse debut by his band Sons of Kemet) float through various ensembles.

Dedicated jazz heads will tell you that the UK scene has been in fine health for ages, and labels such as Eglo, Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section and Tenderlonius’ 22a have long been funnelling jazzy textures onto the dancefloor via 4/4 club beats. But for a lot of young listeners, Black Focus was the crossover record that finally persuaded them to listen to instrumental jazz. New Jazz Imagination (Umlaut Records, 2017). For all that Pat Thomas inhabits the post-serialist soundworld of free-improvisation, there’s a rhythmic drive to his piano playing that connects it not only to the jazz tradition, but to reggae, funk and jungle. This album goes in HARD and kind of sums up the new attitude of London jazz – raw and honest.
