The Day the Earth Stood Still (. Farewell to the Master and Journey to the World) is a 1951 American black-and-white science fiction film from 20th Century Fox, produced by Julian Blaustein and directed by Robert Wise. The screenplay was written by Edmund H. North, based on the 1940 science fiction short story "Farewell to the Master" by Harry Bates, and the film score was composed by Bernard Herrmann.
I've listened to the soundtrack album several times, both at home and on automobile tours. If anything, the 'Day the Earth Stood Still' soundtrack CD is creepier than the movie. I LOVE the 1951 film "The Day the Earth Stood Still". One of the reasons is because of Bernard Herrmann's which is conducted perfectly by Joel McNeely with the essential theremin by Celia Sheen. Each track brings to mind the scene it was played for-if you've seen the film. The informative liner notes not only discusses the work Herrmann put into the score but also how this movie, and it's music (along with its contemporary, "The Thing From Another World"-and its music) broke new ground for science fiction. One person found this helpful.
This soundtrack was composed in August 1951 and was Bernard Herrmann's first soundtrack after he moved to Hollywood. Herrmann chose unusual instrumentation for the film including violin, cello, and bass (all three electric), two theremin electronic instruments (played by Dr. Samuel Hoffman and Paul Shure), two Hammond organs, a large studio electric organ, three vibraphones, two glockenspiels, two pianos, two harps, three trumpets, three trombones, and four tubas. Unusual overdubbing and tape-reversal techniques were used, as well
One of Herrmann's most visionary and influential scores. This 2002 recording of the complete score of Herrmann's The Day the Earth Stood Still conducted by Joel McNeely is the first recording of all the music for the score – even the original soundtrack only includes 18 of its 33 cues. And like the previous nine titles in the series, it is magnificent. McNeely and his 30-piece orchestra of brass, percussion, keyboards, and Theremin perform as well and often better than Herrmann's own recording and producer Robert Townson's superlative sound that is far, far better than the sound of the original 1951 recording.

Produced by NICK REDMAN. It is with this in mind that one should approach The Day the Earth Stood Still: it is a score written in 1951, bearing all the hallmarks of a 1950s science fiction score - but it was quite unlike anything that had been heard before, including Dimitri Tiomkin's The Thing from Another World, which also incorporated the theremin, but in a very. different way. It spawned a whole new sound for the genre, one which continues to be very familiar to people today (if you want to know where Danny Elfman got his ideas for Mars Attacks! from, then look no further).
The Day the Earth Stood Still (soundtrack). The Day the Earth Stood Still soundtrack (1951) was composed in July, and recorded in August 1951. It was Bernard Herrmann's first soundtrack after he moved from New York to Hollywood.
