Xe by Zs, released 27 January 2015 1. The Future of Royalty 2. Wolf Government 3. Corps 4. Weakling 5. Xe Zs is devoid of genre and unclassifiable. The album’s minimalist, esoteric vibes aligned perfectly with Auerbach’s mind-bending and shadowy metallic sculptures.
Xe is the seventh studio album by American experimental ensemble Zs. It is their second album to feature guitarist/composer Patrick Higgins and percussionist Greg Fox, noted for his work with Liturgy and Guardian Alien. The album artwork was designed by Tauba Auerbach and was acquired for the permanent collection of the SF MOMA in 2016. Sam Hillmer – tenor saxophone, pedals. Patrick Higgins – electronics, guitar.
Zs (pronounced /ziːz/) is a Brooklyn, New York-based experimental band. Since the band's inception, Zs has incarnated as everything from a sextet to a duo, now solidified into the quartet of Patrick Higgins (electric guitar), Greg Fox (percussion), Sam Hillmer (tenor saxophone) and Michael Beharie (electronics).
Thank you for watching!
A hypnotic album of experimental jazz noise, Xe by Zs essentially two proper tracks, accompanied by interludes. But man oh man are the two proper tracks (clocking in at a combined 30+ minutes) incredible. Agitated yet repetitive drum lines (courtesy of Liturgy and Guardian Alien virtuoso drummer, Greg Fox) provide the backbone to itchy stacatto guitar and squalling saxophone, with the occasional outburst of screeching noise.
Zs XE. dig it. great. really interesting album. math/prog/noise rock elements along with some jazz and minimalism thrown in the mix. some very textured tracks on here, as well as some sorta catchy moments (ie "the future of royalty"). great album as a whole.
The music on Xe even transcends artistic mediums, influencing renowned visual artist Tauba Auerbach, who believed Zs was examining the same structural concerns as her own work. She created two 3D steel helix sculptures derived from the scientific varieties known as the Z helix and S helix, which were then arranged and photographed in various configurations for the Xe album art. The album’s minimalist, esoteric vibes aligned perfectly with Auerbach’s mind-bending and shadowy metallic sculptures
