Iain David McGeachy OBE (11 September 1948 – 29 January 2009), known professionally as John Martyn, was a British singer-songwriter and guitarist. Over a 40-year career, he released 22 studio albums, and received frequent critical acclaim. Martyn began his career at age 17 as a key member of the British folk music scene, drawing inspiration from American blues and English traditional music, and signed with Island Records.

Live at Leeds is a live album by John Martyn.
John Martyn; BBC Radio 1 Live In Concert John Martyn; Live At Leeds. Most of the acoustic singer-songwriters who emerged on the British rock scene of the late Sixties have moved gently into the folk camp. Not so John Martyn, who has built a loyal cult reputation for almost 25 years of recordings which range from traditional folk material to jazz-rock and dub experiments in sound . The versions of ‘Solid Air’ and ‘Man In The Station’ which follow are near-definitive, while the pinnacle of a great album is ‘Make No Mistake’, with Martyn vocalising like a natural-born son of Van Morrison and Marvin Gaye in a fluent outpouring of emotion. Anonymous New Musical Express 18 April 1992.
After the tedious reception of Sunday's Child, Martyn wanted to release a live album, but a dispute between the great Island label and the grumpy Martyn lead that he would personally market this Live At Leeds: the obvious wink at The Who's classic live album is also well-merited since Martyn's live album is among the finest live renditions ever. The rest of the tracks are also taken from these two albums and one from the next most important Bless The Weather, making this Live At Leeds the perfect witness of John Martyn at the top of his creativity and fame, although I understand the early 80's and the trio of Phil Collins- produced albums sold quite well. In Make No Mistake, Thompson takes the bow to his double bass, giving yet another feeling of depth, but it is in general that Thompson's role in Martyn's oeuvre must be pinpointed.

"LIVE AT LEEDS was originally released in 1976 in a limited edition of 10 000 copies.
John Martyn recorded, designed and marketed LIVE AT LEEDS purely by mail order from his home - he even sold the albums from his own front door.
Each of the albums were numbered and personally signed. They quickly sold out and became real collector's items.
"...it was very effectice, I was the first of the record independents." - John Martyn
The album was rereleased in 1987, but this 1991 issue is the first ever available on compact disc - worldwide.
LIVE AT LEEDS has never lost its atmosphere and quality, and the album features some of John Martyn's finest songs - some of the still being included in concerts today.
Recorded October 1975 at Leeds University."
