The Wedding Present are a British indie rock group originally formed in 1985 in Leeds, England, from the ashes of the Lost Pandas. The band's music has evolved from fast-paced indie rock in the vein of their most obvious influences The Fall, Buzzcocks and Gang of Four to more varied forms. Throughout their career, they have been led by vocalist and guitarist David Gedge, the band's only constant member.
The Wedding Present are an indie rock band hailing from Leeds that formed in 1985. Throughout their career the leader of the group has been lead singer, guitarist and songwriter David Gedge, their sole constant member. One would assume that there’d be at least one band who sounded like The Wedding Present going on to become the biggest in the world. Went to see The Wedding Present at the 02 Academy Islington last night and they were awesome. Ostensibly a 30 year celebration of their Singles album Tommy, there was a sprinkling of other tracks and frontman David Gedge was on fine form as was the band generally. Great atmosphere and sound (had been very disappointed with the sound levels at a gig the previous week at another venue), so well done Islington!
The Wedding Present have had eighteen UK Top 40 hit single. ot bad for a band that has, from its inception, stubbornly refused to play the record industry’s game. In 1985 David Lewis Gedge boarded a National Express coach in London with 500 records packed into a pair of his mother’s suitcases and, in this fashion, the band’s debut single GO OUT AND GET ‘EM BOY! was deliveredto the distribution company, and The Wedding Present was born. That pioneering spirit has been at the core of the band’s philosophy ever since. TAKE FOUNTAIN, the resultant album, was recorded in Seattle by SteveFisk and released, perhaps ironically, on St. Valentine’s Day 2005. This saw Gedge reviving The Wedding Present name for the first album since 1996’s SATURNALIA to a torrent of critical acclaim.
The Wedding Present’s latest opus is a twenty track double album with each track accompanied by a music video. There’s instrumentals, love songs, and bangers aplenty, proving that, if anything, The Wedding Present are only improving with age. David Gedge took some time recently to discuss the album with us, the influence of having an ever changing line up, and the upcoming 30th anniversary of The Wedding Present’s debut album, George Best. Overlown: Your new album Going, Goin. s a double album consisting of twenty songs, each of which has an accompanying short film
