Mehegan's Contemporary Piano Styles. Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 19 years ago. This is the last in a series of four volumes created between 1959 and 1965 by jazz pianist and instructor John Mehegan. The complete set is of the utmost historical importance for anyone with a serious interest in jazz piano. Before Mehegan, no other author had succeeded in unlocking the mysteries of jazz piano and then communicating them to a mass audience in a clear and cogent manner.

I am not a jazz pianist; in fact, I'm not even a good pianist. But I have tried, for a long time, to "get the gist" of jazz improvisation, and I've not yet succeeded. I've discovered two things, though: One, I think the jazz greats are to be greatly admired.

Well now, if I may quote John Mehegan's inscription to me in his brilliant first volume of JAZZ IMPROVISATION "To Harold Arlen, whose tunes are a source of inspiration to all jazz men" - it would seem that there is some contingent area where song writers and jazz musicians meet to draw from a common source. That melody has been the base for many original inventions, and I bow to the superb talents of the men in this volume who have collaborated (although they may not know it) with many a song writer in keeping their songs interestingly alive. Let no one who thinks he knoW~- 1lything about jazz improvisation or the various piano styles that have evolved through the years slough off this volume as something to rest in a dusty archive.

This particular album reissues two sets cut by Wayne during the 1950s. The first, covering tracks 1-4 and 7-10, is from 1953 sessions with his Quartet featuring Zoot Sims and Brew Moore; the second session, made the following year with the John Mehegan Quartet, comprises the other four tunes. There are some standards along with seven originals, including five by Wayne. Words that can best be used to describe the latter are "innocuous," "pleasant," "nice background music.

Mehegan was born in Wethersfield, Connecticut, and began playing the piano at the age of five. He taught himself to play by matching his fingers to the notes played on a neighborhood player piano. His mother gave him violin lessons, but he preferred piano. In 1941 he arrived in Manhattan where he lived with his first wife, Doris, and their two children, Carey and Gretchen.
