The Old Rugged Cross" is a popular hymn written in 1912 by evangelist and song-leader George Bennard (1873–1958). George Bennard was a native of Youngstown, Ohio, but was reared in Iowa. After his conversion in a Salvation Army meeting, he and his wife became brigade leaders before leaving the organization for the Methodist Church.

Lester McFarland and Robert Gardner were back in New York in December 1927 for a week-long recording session with Brunswick-Vocalion that resulted in about 30 sides. The session was a mix of spiritual and sentimental songs, including Lay My Head Beneath the Rose. Almost all of the tracks are mandolin-guitar duets, which had become the duo’s trademark sound by this time. Lester McFarland adds harmonica on this track. Swipe left for record clip! The an trio known as the Kentucky Thoroughbreds also recorded their take on the old vaudeville classic Preacher and the Bear in April 1927. The Paramount master was licensed to Broadway under the ‘Old Smokey Twins’ alias. The song has been recorded many, many times, but this is likely the first time with mandolin accompaniment.

Rock of Ages: The Band in Concert is a live album by the Band, released in 1972. It was compiled from recordings made during their series of shows at the Academy of Music in New York City, from December 28 through December 31, 1971. It peaked at on the Billboard 200 chart, and was certified a gold record by the RIAA. An expanded release of recordings taken from the same series of shows, called Live at the Academy of Music 1971, was released in 2013.
