Black One is the fifth album by Sunn O))). It is a combination of both experimental and traditional Sunn O))), utilizing many guest musicians, including black metal musicians Malefic and Wrest from Xasthur and Leviathan, respectively. The band supposedly also went so far as to lock the claustrophobic Malefic in a casket to record the vocals on "Báthory Erzsébet".

The sixth and darkest sunn 0))) album featuring very special guests Oren Ambarchi, Wrest (Leviathan/Lurker of Chalice/ Twilight) Malefic (Xasthur, Twilight) and John Weise (Bastard Noise). Tonal magma explosions created under the influence of utter blackest atmospheres, sunn 0))) endlessly seeks to push boundaries and demolish pre-conceived ideas of their eminence. Unorthodox and experimental recording methods were used to obtain the petrifying eerie tone of the voices on this album. For the epic side 4 piece, Bathory Erzebet, sunn 0))) procured a casket then loaded it into a Cadillac Hearse, and locked Malefic inside with only a microphone and a severe sense of claustrophobia. The result is truly suffocating and disturbing! Mammoth giants crushing valleys of the drowned. This album is as bleak, crushing, and devoid of light as only they possibly could.

Sixth album from the doom metal duo nearly matches their ferocious live power, and features assistance from noise icon John Wiese and experimental guitarist and percussionist Oren Ambarchi. The bulk of the album- each of the final five tracks are at least eight minutes long, with four of them moving past the 10:00 mark- begins with an extended cover of Immortal's "Cursed Realms (of the Winterdemons)". Here Xasthur aka Malefic is cast asunder, grumbling about ravens, cursed realms, and the central thesis that "the face of the earth/ Will be to know black silence. It's more than two times as long as the original and built largely around Malefic's sub-tonal scowls and bleeding feedback drone.

So, when Black One was released, it came as a bit of a surprise that the band managed to delicately enhance all of the best aspects of their music and release it in a comprehensive package, devoid of highly experimental tracks like White2's "bassAliens" or self-referential pieces (prior to Black One, five studio album tracks had "O)))" in. their title). As one might suspect from taking a glance at the album name and cover, Black One isn't a very hopeful record. It knows exactly where it's going at gets there efficiently, but it's an unrelentingly gloomy record that pulls no punches. The lightest song here is the brief intro "Sin Nanna", in which instrumentalist Oren Ambarchi handles a flock of instruments, from buzzing guitars to pounding drums to sweeping atmospherics. By itself, the track is less than substantial, but it does an excellent job of setting the mood for the rest of the album.

Sunn's darkest album yet. 68%. caspian. Black One says it all. 99%. namelessheretic. Cursed Realms (Of the Winterdemons)" is technically a cover song of the Immortal song of the same name; however, the music itself is different from the actual song (but Sunn O))) used the same lyrics from the song. "Báthory Erzsébet" also is considered a loose cover version of the song "A Fine Day to Die" by Bathory. The vocals of the song "CandleGoat" are taken from "Freezing Moon" by Mayhem and were written by Dead in 1991. Malefic, who is claustrophobic, was locked in a casket to record the vocals for "Báthory Erzsébet".
