Refuge Denied is the debut studio album by American heavy metal band Sanctuary, released in 1988. After having recorded their first demo, guitarist Lenny Rutledge managed to establish contact with singer and guitarist Dave Mustaine after a show of his band, Megadeth. Mustaine expressed interest in the demo and in acting as producer. Mustaine's manager at the time, Keith Rawls, financed the recording and finally became Sanctuary's manager. Talks to a number of record labels led to the signing with Epic.

Sanctuary Refuge Denied. Warrel Dane reportedly injured himself during the making of this album. This was denied in an interview with Sweden Rock Magazine issue 8, 2014.
See, there was no room for Paul Simon in that weary, little head. So, after recognizing Warrel’s froglike face in the backsleeve of the album, I was truly amazed by my discovery. An hour later, Refuge denied became an ol listen, and paved the way for the coming of the undoubtedly monumental Into the Mirror Black. Refuge Denied stands as the first album for Sanctuary, whose band members Warrel Dane and Jim Sheppard would later became recognized as the spinal chord of Nevermore
Band Name Sanctuary (USA-1). Album Name Refuge Denied. Its early 90's when by accident I came across this album that was being played in my friends cassette player (I just dated myself) and the song "The Third War" was playing and I was immediately glued to the music. I asked my friend about this cassette which he later let me burn a copy and from that day on, I was the biggest Sanctuary fan. Sanctuary's music can be described like a cross between early Helloween and Mercyful Fate
Refuge Denied is one of those albums that is both typical to its time period, yet reflects the atypical and chaotic character of its type. Straightforward songs like "Battle Angels" features their heavy riffs and falsetto vocals by Dane. Their heavy work can be heard on songs like "Die for My Sins", with indelible choruses and trashy riffing. The album would prove to be the stepping stone to the equally excellent follow-up Into The Mirror Black. Dane and Sheppard would later form Prog Metal kings Nevermore
