Rocket from the Tombs (or RFTT) is an American rock band originally active from mid-1974 to mid-1975 in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. The band was reconstituted several times with various line-ups starting in 2003. Heralded as an important protopunk group, they were little known during the band's original lifetime, though various members later achieved renown in Pere Ubu and the Dead Boys. Billy Bob Hargus wrote, however, that "The sound of the Rockets is much more ferocious than Ubu or the Dead Boys.

Formed in the early 70's by the monstrous Crocus Behemoth (aka David Thomas), Rocket from the Tombs represented Cleveland's dying factories and urban wasteland just as the Detroit pre-punks had done in regards to their decaying city. After sometime, the group caught the eye of guitarist Peter Laughner. Laughner joined RFTT and along with bassist Craig Bell, drummer John Madansky, and guitarist Gene O'Connor, the lineup was solidified.

When assessing the new reunion album by Rocket from the Tombs, it’s hard not to wonder what to make of it. This is a reunion by one of the most simultaneously legendary yet unheard bands in music, one whose influence ranges far and wide yet one that was never able to record a real studio album in its classic incarnation. Barfly, the result, is therefore eagerly anticipated by fans wishing to hear this band in a real recording situation. Yet ironically enough, it’s those fans that may be the least satisfied with Barfly. If you approach the album as simply a solo record by Pere Ubu’s singer with two legendary punk rock guitar players, you may find it reasonably entertaining.

Rocket from the Tombs. RFTT's 2011 album Barfly (their first proper album of new material) featured Chrome and Lloyd, but it was a curiously subdued set that seemed to keep the guitarists on a short leash, and it was hard not to wonder if Thomas really wanted to collaborate with the guitarists after years as the benevolent dictator of Pere Ubu.
