Ralph Vaughan Williams was an English composer who had composed many symphonies, chamber music, opera, choral music and film scores. Encouraged by this experience, Vaughan Williams incorporated this style into many of his compositions. He was not just a composer; he was a teacher, lecturer and was the earliest composers to collect folk music.

The music is a large scale setting of the events of the Nativity drawn from the King James Bible, the Book of Common Prayer. The narration of events is intersperced with poetry from various sources from Milton, Martin Luther, Thomas Hardy and others. This is a splendid recording of Ralph Vaughan Williams' Christmas music which I don't think has been surpassed. The London Symphony Orchestra and the soloists and choirs make magnificent music under Richard Hickox's direction.

In Vernon Handley, who has died aged 77, music has lost one of its finest conductors, a master of his craft and a tireless champion of British music. From Oxford he went to study in London at the Guildhall School of Music, where his performing instrument was the double bass. But his chief mentor was Sir Adrian Boult. He wrote to him out of the blue and Boult became his friend, taking the younger man on as his assistant. He conducted all over the world, winning countless well-deserved awards and prizes for his recordings. Though he surely deserved a knighthood, he had to be content with a CBE, awarded in 2004.
