The Belizean–Guatemalan territorial dispute is an unresolved binational territorial dispute between the states of Belize and Guatemala, neighbours in Central America. The territory of Belize has been claimed in whole or in part by Guatemala since 1821. The present dispute originates with imperial Spain's claim to all New World territories west of the line established in the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494

The Maya of Belize have never lived in isolation. Between 1200 and 600 BC Maya ideology was influenced to some degree by the Olmec people from the Tabasco-Veracruz area. There is also the importation of plumbate pottery from the Pacific coasts of El Salvador and Guatemala. The introduction of metallurgy and the presence of gold and copper objects during this time also indicate contacts with more distant areas of Western Mexico and Costa Rica. The Maya of Belize are grouped by their dialect, known as the Yucatec, Kekchi, and Mopan Maya people. While many of their customs and traditions are similar, each sub-group speaks their own uniquely distinct dialect. The arrival of European settlers in the area was long after the bulk of the ancient Maya civilization had already collapsed. Historical records in the British archives repeatedly refer to hostile Indians who would raid towns and villages before disappearing into the forest. Of the surviving Maya population in Belize, the Mopan and Kekchi are the most numerous. The modern Maya people have preserved the religion, customs, and traditions of their great civilization. You can learn more about Maya history by visiting the many Maya ruins and caves in Belize.

Many Maya still lived in Belize when the Europeans (Spanish and British) came in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries. Displaced by the British occupation, the Maya remained in the interior of the country until the mid-nineteenth Century when they began to resist the colonial invasion. There are presently three groups of Maya living in various areas of Belize. The Yucatec Maya, who migrated from the south of Mexico, live in the northern districts and have merged to a great extent with the Mestizo population. The Mopan Maya came from San Luis in the Peten region of Guatemala, and settled in San Antonio, Toledo. Today, they can also be found in Santa Cruz, San Jose, Santa Elena, and Pueblo Viejo in the Toledo District; as well as Santa Rosa, Maya Mopan, and San Roman in the Stann Creek District.

An interesting ethnographic collection of Q'eqchi traditional music on guitar, violin, marimba, and prayer spoken and sung in the Q'eqchi-Maya language. Although I am not sure and there have been a couple of editions of this disc it seems likely that these recording are from the 1960s.
