Coltrane Jazz is the sixth studio album by jazz musician John Coltrane, released in 1961 on Atlantic Records, catalogue SD 1354. The song "Village Blues" is noted as a landmark recording, as it marks the first session date of the early John Coltrane Quartet on record. Featured alongside Coltrane are pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones, and bassist Steve Davis (who would within 18 months have been replaced by first Reggie Workman and then Jimmy Garrison who would stay with Coltrane until his death.

The first album to hit the shelves after Giant Steps, Coltrane Jazz was largely recorded in late 1959, although one of the eight songs ("Village Blues") was done in late 1960. On everything save the aforementioned "Village Blues," Coltrane used the Miles Davis rhythm section of pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb. While not the groundbreaker that Giant Steps was, Coltrane Jazz was a good consolidation of his gains as he prepared to launch into his peak years of the 1960s

An album of previously unheard original compositions by the legendary jazz saxophonist has been discovered 55 years after its recording. Sonny Rollins, a peer of Coltrane’s and also regarded as one of the greatest jazz saxophonists of all time, described the discovery as like finding a new room in the Great Pyramid. Among the seven tracks are two completely unheard original compositions, called Untitled Original 11383 and Untitled Original 11386, both of which are played on soprano saxophone

Kenny Burrell Golden Tracks. John Coltrane Quintet: Live at Newport Jazz Festival 1961.

John Coltrane's son Ravi Coltrane on the long-lost recording of his father's that is now seeing the light of day for the first time. The release of a new album from jazz legend John Coltrane, recorded in that same hallowed room in 1963. Never mind that 55 years have passed, the material is brand-new - not a reissue, not a live release, not a collection of B-sides and rarities - and includes two never-before-heard compositions. Titled In Both Directions At Once: The Lost Album, the 14-track, two-disc album (out June 29 on Impulse!) consists of remastered session tapes long assumed to be lost. They were discovered in the possession of Coltrane’s family, specifically descendants of him and his first wife Naima

By 1964, Coltrane’s quartet was at the peak of their career and considered the best jazz group of the time. Coltrane had gone through a lot at this point, battling with drugs and other personal issues while trying to maintain his playing. By then, he had become very spiritual, turning to his faith in his times of need. His connection to this becomes evident in his music, especially in A Love Supreme.
