Jack Smith (born May 30, 1896 The Bronx, New York – died May 13, 1950, New York City) was known as "Whispering" Jack Smith and was a popular baritone singer in the 1920s and 1930s who made a brief come-back in the early 1940s. Whispering Jack Smith, born John Schmidt, was a popular singer of the 20's and 30's. While he didn't actually whisper, he did sing softly and quietly, very close to his microphone, and often dropped into plain speech. This created an intimate effect that separated him from other singers of the time. Or did so, that is, up until he began to be widely imitated.
