Herbert von Karajan’s first performance with the Berliner Philharmoniker in April 1938 was a sensation – and aroused the jealousy of principal conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, who from then on considered the young star his rival. Furtwängler died in 1954, and the direction of an America tour the year thereafter that had already been planned devolved to Karajan. After successful completion of the tour, Karajan was appointed principal conductor in 1956. Under Karajan’s leadership, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra also developed into global players – thanks to spectacular tours to America, Japan and China, as well as innumerable sound and film recordings. Karajan was a man of the media, open for all innovations in recording engineering.

Some might question the wisdom of re-releasing these recordings by Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic of works by Vivaldi and Bach from the '60s and '70s. The days when modern conductors and orchestras were allowed free range over Baroque music are long gone and Karajan and the Berlin's performances now seem stylistically wholly inappropriate. The opulence of the Berlin's tone, the luxuriousness of its textures, and the sumptuousness of its ensemble now seem hopelessly antiquated in Baroque repertoire.

Sample this album Artist - Artist (Sample). 1. 30. Beethoven: Symphony N. In C, O. 1 - 1. Adagio molto - Allegro con brio. by Berliner Philharmoniker and Herbert von Karajan. Herbert von Karajan recorded the entire cycle of Beethoven symphonies four times during his long career, and this, the final one, summarizes his attitudes about both Beethoven, and recording technology in general. Karajan was always keen to explore new recording technologies, and was the first major conductor to champion the compact disc. His recording of "The Magic Flute" was Deutsche Grammophon's first digital release, and in his final years he made a special effort to record much of his core repertoire in the new digital format

Herbert von Karajan (German: (listen); born Heribert Ritter von Karajan; 5 April 1908 – 16 July 1989) was an Austrian conductor. He was principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years. Generally regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, he was a dominant figure in European classical music from the mid-1950s until his death. Part of the reason for this was the large number of recordings he made and their prominence during his lifetime
