Harry James And His Orchestra 1948-49 is a double album by American trumpeter Harry James with The Harry James Orchestra. The album consists of live radio transcripts recorded during 1948 and 1949 and was released in 1969 by Big Band Landmarks (Volumes X-XI). As bop surpassed swing by the late 1940s, James was surprisingly open to its influence.

The orchestra recorded "Moonglow", which became a number one hit and was followed by the Top Ten hits "Take My Word" and "Bugle Call Rag". NBC hired Goodman for the radio program Let's Dance. John Hammond asked Fletcher Henderson if he wanted to write arrangements for Goodman, and Henderson agreed. 114 During the Depression, Henderson disbanded his orchestra because he was in debt  . The sold-out concert was held on the evening of January 16, 1938. It is regarded as one of the most significant in jazz history.

Benny Goodman & His Orchestra. Despite competition from Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, and Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman largely held on to his popularity during the 1939-1940 period. The personnel was changing in his big band, but it was still a strong outfit with trumpeters Ziggy Elman and Jimmy Maxwell, trombonist Vernon Brown, Jerry Jerome on tenor, pianist Johnny Guarnieri, and singer Helen Forrest being significant voices.

Toward the end of his career, Beefeater Martini in a Beer Glass in hand, Harry James set forth with Sheffield Labs to record direct to disk. These were true High Fidelity Recordings in every respect. This was a mature and seasoned Harry and gone was the syrupy trumpet of his younger years. The original performances were recorded in analog Direct To Disk by Sheffield Labs using special custom equipment. This was one of one of the last REAL Big Bands at its best (The CDs came from the Taped Back-up Masters).
