Jumalten Aika" consists of five songs, with their roots digging deep into the mythical history of Finland. Even though the lyrical theme of the album is as old as heaven, the songs still manage to invoke strong, even primordial feelings in the 21st century listener. The very essence of what makes Moonsorrow so intriguing and succesfull is infact the talent of creating irresistible melodies and then adding those melodies to the cold and raw elements of black metal, while still keeping intact with folk metal. This recipe is followed in "Jumalten Aika" aswell, but not the boring repetitive way - quite the opposite; varying it interestingly. Folk influences are even more present on "Jumalten Aika".

The new album, Jumalten Aika ( The Age of Gods ), opens with folk instruments, creating a ritualistic aura. After a minute and a half of this they storm into the larger-than-life metal you have come to expect from them. The black metal side of what they do is toned down on this album, as this one dives into folk metal on an epic scale. Holding true to their mission statement, the album does have a commanding Viking feel, without inspiring you to go into a jig with your drinking horn. Photo by Mikael Karlbom. Moonsorrow might be telling a story, but they dig into their souls and spill a great deal of emotion into the music. They return to another bare-bones metal riff to open Ihmisen Aika, but the raw nature of this is short-lived. The band doesn’t hesitate to build back up into a multi-layered attack. The bass is more present in the mix on this song as well.

Jumalten aika is very much cut from the same cloth as the band’s later material. The scope is sweeping, the development is slow. Long, slow introductory riffs, songs audibly padded out by atmospheric g fires or, like on Vkkm, footfalls through snow-and a wall of sound that sounds like no one but Moonsorrow. Jumalten aika continues the tradition, too, of being an engaging album in spite of the length of the songs
