Astrud Gilberto (b. 1940) is a Brazilian-born singer best known for her jazz style samba and bossa nova music. Gilberto was born Astrud Winert in the state of Bahia in the north-east of Brazil, on 29th March 1940. Her mother was Brazilian her father German. She grew up in Rio de Janeiro, and moved to the USA in the early 1960s, where she still lives. In her mid-teens, she became part of (her own words) a "musical clan" when she met João Gilberto, whom she described as the clan's musical "guru". She married him a few months later, in 1959.

Astrud Gilberto and her former husband Carlos Antonio Jobim brought the Bossa Nova to the States more than 50 years ago. I can still vividly recall hearing them perform in a little cafe at the Hotel Piaf in Rio de Janiero in 1963 and falling in love with the delightful, sensuous sound. This enchanting album awakened this wonderful musical figure and, listening to this album while visiting Rio last year, it made me feel soooo good! Enjoy.

Tall and tan and young And lovely the girl from Ipanema Goes walking and when she passes He smiles, but she doesn't see. Oh, but he watches so sadly How can he tell her he loves her Yes, he would give his heart gladly But each day when she walks to the sea She looks straight ahead, not at he. Tall and tan and young And lovely the girl from Ipanema Goes walking and when she passes He smiles, but she doesn't see She doesn't see No, she doesn't see But she doesn't see She doesn't see No, she doesn't see. Album: Girl from Ipanema, 2016. Beautifully realized live version of the classic Brazilian song by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes - with English lyrics written by Norman Gimbel for Astrud's husband João's album with Stan Getz in 1963. Astrud was recruited to sing the English lyrics at the recording session - and the single's popularity thrust her into the spotlight even though she wasn't a trained singer. This is her first appearance on US television.
