It may have seemed like a gamble, especially with Monk’s reputation as a poorly selling wild card. The album was met with mixed success, with some critics welcoming it hesitantly, and others feeling that it lacked the energy that made Monk’s previous work interesting. A second cover album of various standards was commissioned, and met with the same mixed success. Though things seemed slow in the coming, both Monk and Duke would experience great success in following years. Career Revival and Genius Recognized. Towards the end of 1956, with two moderately successful cover albums under his belt, Monk recorded and released his first album of original composition, Brilliant Corners.

Thelonious Monk (piano/arranger) began his illustrious relationship with Riverside Records on the pair of July 21 and 27, 1955, dates needed to complete the eight sides for Plays Duke Ellington (1955). Monk commands a trio that also presents the talents of Oscar Pettiford (bass) and Kenny Clarke (drums) on all the tracks sans "Solitude," which appropriately enough features an unaccompanied piano. The delicacy and inherently intricate melodies that Duke Ellington is best known for are perfectly matched to Monk's angular and progressive interpretations

Monk Plays Ellington was followed by another album of standards by other composers, The Unique Thelonious Monk. Both albums were well received by critics, although they sold only moderately, and ironically it was his third Riverside LP Brilliant Corners, almost completely original material, which became both a commercial and critical success. Sean Murphy of PopMatters called it "an outstanding album" upon its reissue in 2007 and wrote that it "tends to exist as an overlooked gem in the Monk discography, sandwiched as it is between his earlier genius of modern music stage and the mid ‘50s through mid ‘60s, when he made his most enduring work.
